Can we get financial help for travel to college

Hi
I have 3 children and the oldest has left school this year and is off to college in Sept. she had to choose from 2 colleges, one that was only a mile away and started to the course she wanted this year and another that has run the course for years and is well set up but this is about 12 miles away.
She has picked the one that is 12 miles away, but now we have to sort out travel, but it looks like (on what I have read) because theres a place closer that does the same course we wont get any help what so ever with the cost.
due to loss of a job we have now lost Working tax credits as we are down to 14 working hours a week and only now get Child tax credit, so money is tight at the moment.
Is there any way we could get cheaper travel Bus or train for my 16 year old daughter ?
Any Help would be great :j

Thanks

  • Under 18s get free or reduced travel in some council areas, you'd need to check with your own council, but other than that, she chose the college, it's up to her (you) to fund the costs, not the tax payer.
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

You should contact the college your daughter will be attending as they will have extra funds for situations like this now that EMA has finished.

Actually if she chose the college because she feels she will achieve better results and in the long term get a better paid job, the taxpayer should support her as she will put more back into the system in the long run.
  • can she buy a weekly bus pass?usually a massive saving

My daughter goes to our nearest college which is twenty miles away.

She was assessed for a bursary on our income (no fees to pay in Scotland)

She was awarded seven pounds for the year, our income is too high for tax credits so I was surprised. But apparently any award of a bursary qualifies her for a bus pass, which saved us thirty pounds a week.

So speak to the college about a bursary, you may find that it will cover a bus pass even if the award is small.
