Can I reclaim my cancelled car insurance?

Options
Two days ago I had an accident in my car which was not my fault. I drove into the back of someone who decided to stop on a slip road. Because I went into the back of the car in front the insurance company said it would probably go down as my fault. I've put in a claim for the accident. My car is probably written off and I'm considering not getting a replacement car as I'm going to university. Can I cancel my insurance and will I be able to get a refund? I know I'll probably have to pay some sort of extortionate cancellation fee. I've had the insurance for 4 months. My insurer is admiral and looking over the forum I've noticed they have rubbish customer service and you really have to push the do get anything done.

I paid my insurance at the start of the year it was £1700 as I'm 19.

I would be grateful if people could give me some advice on the situation.

If you drove into the back of another vehicle, there is no probably about it, you are 100% responsible.
Whoever you drove into will be claiming on your insurance, vehicle repair, hire vehicle, possibly bodily injury

Speak to your insurance company. I really cant see them forking out potentially thousands of pounds and giving you your money back (less a fee)

Of course you cant, your legally obliged to insure your car. If you hadnt of had the car insurance you would be getting sued right now.

I think the OP meant he wasnt going to get another car and so wants to cancel the rest of the insurance but Im fairly sure it doesnt work like that. Not sure about it but if a claim is made doesnt that end the insurance and if you were getting another car wouldnt you have to insure it from scratch.

he's put a claim in for his because its a write off, the other party will be claiming no doubt,

    Which makes it your fault.

No. Car in insurance is an annual contract and not pay as you go. If you have a claim in the 12 month period of cover, then the insurance has done its job and you cannot get a refund.

You will be able to transfer it to a new vehicle though (although note that some insurers have recently stopped doing that - another thing being lopped off to make the premium appear higher up the quote comparison sites).

Im afraid the other posters are correct if you went into the back of someone then you are at fault as its considered to be driving without due care and attention. The only time that you would not be is if there is an aggravating factor from the other side, normally this would be that they were under the influence of drink or drugs which would make them automatically at fault... but that would be impossible to prove now if the police were not called and conducted all relevant tests on both of you. That’s the law side of things and I would fall off the chair if your insurance company refund you. they are going to be paying out allot of money here plus if you are fully comp you can make a claim on the insurance aswell.
Its not a good situation but on the brightside you are still fit and well just a few quid down :)
