Sony laptop breaks down after 18 months

A Sony laptop bought with the standard 1 year guarantee broke down once at 11 months (and was repaired) and then again at 18 months. The retailer (Amazon) has been contacted and there have been lengthy discussions along the lines of 'i had an expectation when I puchased a Sony laptop that it would not break down twice in 18 months' but this has ended in stalemate.

Any thoughts?

Has anyone successfully got anywhere with just out of warranty electrical goods?

Is it the same fault? If so, you might also ask in the consumer rights section for general advice on faulty electricals that have had repaired faults re-occur, as it doesn't specifically need to be 'Techie' advice here.

What was the original problem? What is this problem? There are many parts that can be at fault, so more information might help.

From what I understand, under the SOGA you could argue that the original fault wasn't fixed, and also that there wasn't sufficient durability for it to break twice within the statutory 6 years.
  • Sale of Goods Act rights - reasonably quality, onus is on the retailer not manufacturer, warranty is in addition to statutory rights...

i.e. Is it reasonable to assume that a premium brand laptop will last more than 18 months?

Clearly it has not lasted for a "reasonable length of time" as part of your consumer rights and from a laptop point of view 18months is not long enough.

Did you pay by credit card?

    The Sale of Goods Act.

All you need for action against Amazon.

I've usually found Sony to be pretty good with laptop repairs.

I had a Sony VGN model laptop which developed a problem with the graphics card after 2 and a half years. Apparently it was a known fault and Sony collected machine, fitted a new motherboard free of charge, and re-delivered within 5 days.

My present Sony Vaio F series socket where you plug in the battery became damaged within a couple of months of purchase. Sony repaired very efficiently, but I had to pay as the fault was due to me.

Worth phoning Sony and see what they say.

    Good luck

I had a similar issue with an HP laptop three months ago: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3251436 The seller (Currys) offered to look at it for a £40 fee which they would refund if it was a manufacturing fault, but I didn't risk that and instead cut my losses and sold the laptop on Ebay. I bought a new one for an extra £60-odd so didn't work out too bad in the end.

In future I'd always get a 3-year warranty with laptops, as these can be bought for about £50 usually.
