Syncing a calendar between an iPad and an iPhone

I have an ipad2 and an iPhone 4. I use a netbook loaded with windows 7 to synchronies both items.
I am very happy that my address book in Windows contacts allows my contacts to be updated to both the iPad and the iPhone when they are synced.
My problem is my calendar. I have got very comfortable using my iPhone as a calendar and I am very happy with it. Having more recently purchased the iPad I would love to be able to sync my calendar between them.
However it does not work at present and I am looking for a solution.
When syncing either devise with my netbook in the info folder it shows that "no supported calendar application can be found"
Does anyone one know of a FREE calendar that I can download to my netbook that will do the job for me.

I am aware and hopeful that the NEW CLOUD experience from Apple coming in September or October might be the answer but I am looking for a solution foe now.
Thanks

GMail works to some level with iPhones/ iPads/ OS X devices but it isn't perfect (but serviceable). Using it, it will automatically sync the two all the time they have internet connection. You don't then use the notebook to sync them and the netbook itself can sync with it via the internet too.

Mobile Me was Apple's own service but this was suspended for new customers once they announced the launch of iCloud. Mobile Me wasn't free but the basic functionality of iCloud, including calendar will be (see http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/contacts-calendar-mail.html) Of cause the question is if apple or 3rd parties will write windows based applications that use it or not for your net book
  • Use gmail, enable PUSH, and then it all works perfectly and is free.

    Thanks everyone.
    Update.

Ok, now have Google calendar and am signed in with my Google.
So I am halfway there with a solution as any entrys I make in the Google Calendar on my netbook are transferred to my iPad and iPhone when I sync them.
However as the iPhone has been my principle calendar for the last 12 months I have a lot loaded on to it.
So next question how do I import my iPhone calendar in to the Google calendar. Or do I have to laboriously by hand put all the appointments, dates, birthdays, reminders etc, etc in by hand.
    I hope not.
Do you have a possible solution.
Or do you all mean that I use google calendar on IPAD AND IPHONE!
I like the native calendars so want to keep using them. I am assuming when apple cloud comes on stream soon that will do the job. But I want a fix now.
    Please.
    Thanks

    Final update.
    First thanks to all.
I now have google calendar running on all three devices. If I need to update I use the google to do this. This then updates the native calendars that I prefer.
