council flat

I currently live with my sister and her bf, I currently pay them £240 a month.

They want me to move out soon.

Flats roughly cost £600 pm

She was saying for me to join the council house/flats waiting list?

what is that? and how I do it?

Go to the nearest housing office and register your interest in being put on a list,

Some are very long and you have certain critea to meet to put up the list, ie, have kids, disabled and so on otherwise you are pretty much bottom of the list and depending on the area you could wait up to a few years to be housed by them.

I have been on the list for more than 10 years and heard nothing from the council. It's certainly no harm to get on it but I wouldn't expect too much. I guess it depends on which area you are in too.

I would agree, enquire and get on the list, but don't hold your breath!

There are criteria to meet as there are so few council properties to go round. Your individual circumstances will be taken into account, but families with children, low income and other issues usually take priority. If you are single, working and no kids, you will be very low on the list.

If the council can't help you quickly enough, could you consider a house share, or renting a room from someone? It will likely cost more than your sister is charging (depending on the area) but less than renting a whole flat to yourself. You should be able to find rooms for rent online or in the local paper.

    Good luck finding something.
Hoping to create a beautiful life for DS and I.

You may be able to apply online too. You will have to visit your local authority's website to do this.

10 yrs really! my friend was on the list for 10 yrs single working no kids etc. She finally got offered a studio flat, which she took. Her council said they can't have anyone on the list for more than 10 years thats only reason she got a place, we was all shocked as you can imagine.

I've been on the list 5 years, Think i'll win the lotto before I get a place!

If you have been flat sharing now, it would probably be a good idea to look for other flatshares. If you can share with another couple of people your rent will be a lot less. Also bills become a lot less e.g. Only one tv licence, council tax (although souks get 25% off if on own), water, utilities etc

Oh interesting! I have another 9 years to wait then if my council has the same policy (single, no kids).

Personally I wouldn't want anything less than a self contained 1 bedroomed flat though.
