Thanks for the replys folks, it just something we were taking about last night. I'm not even sure it if sounds right to be honest & if we do go for it, we will both double barrel otherwise I will just take his name. We both want the same surname:D

I have a surname that is unique to my family so I wanted to keep it, however I wanted to have same surname as DH. so we both agreed wed both have a double barrelled name. In some respects we could have just got him to change his name to mine, but oh well.

So now we are married I am in the process of changing everything for both of us. I did read that the cheapest way is for the man to change his before the wedding by deed-poll, and then the woman can change hers for free afterwards (which is very sexist and should be updated). however, I then realised there is no need for us to change our names by deed poll. As I can just use our marriage certificate to change our names. So I will not be paying deed poll anything!!

Claire, is this correct?? I was looking into this (albeit briefly) as both of us are having both surnames, but from my understanding OH still needs to change his name by deed poll, but the marriage means that i will be able to take his name and therefore not need to change it by deed poll??

So if he changes it before the wedding, only he will need to pay to change it. If we wait until after the wedding we will both need to pay to change them.

Will be great if that's not the case!!

You don't actually need to pay to change your name by deed poll!!!

My OH did it a while ago (changed to his mother's maiden name as he hasn't seen his dad for 30 years and grandad was more like dad) and banks, DVLA etc have accepted his certificate.

You just have to get someone to sign it who knows you, so OH's best man did it.

All we did was google it and found somewhere that did a free one and sent it as a pdf.

I think the only time it needs to have been signed by a solicitor is to get a new passport, which he will do when his runs out and we decide to travel somewhere he needs it!!!

my hubby took my name :)
you do not have to change it by deed pole- he got told this by the registrar and deed pole themselves
he could have just taken the marriage certificate and banks, etc would have just taken that-
but he decided he wanted to do it by deed pole so that there is a record of it legally and in paperwork for our children, childrens children etc
it only cost £30 and you can pre date it- so he did it start of July to begin 23.7
Is a married woman!! 23rd July 2011 Best day of my life!
