Double Barrel Surnames

Hi All,

If you double barrel your surname, who's names goes first? Is there a set way of doing it or is it just preference. Me & H2B were taking about it last night as he said what about doing it, so I can keep my name as i'm the last one in my family. I need to look into it as no idea how we do it & how he changes his names, but just wondered which way round it went?

Cheers Fawny

  • I think you can just choose whichever order you think sounds best - there probably is a traditional way of doing it, but I doubt many people know what that is!

In terms of changing names - if he pays to change his name before the wedding (doesn't need to actually use it until you are married), then you won't have to pay to change yours as you are entitlesd to adopt his name on marriage.

Why don't you keep your name and he keeps his? or could he just change his to your name?

That way you can keep your name if that is what you want?

I'm no expert on how you go about constructing a double-barrelled surname, but I think in my experience it's unusual for the husband to change his name.

Usually he will retain his (eg Smith), whilst the wife becomes Jones-Smith, and possibly any children are Jones-Smith too?

we are double barraling our names and changing his by deed poll before and then doing mine after

the children already have both of our names

we chose to do this instead of havng one or the other because i am the last in my family with my surname (and grandad wanted his grandkids to be Dixons (not my real surname just first one i saw on facebook)

my OH wants to match the rest of us so we all have the same name - it does also make life a bit easier esp with drs appointments find it all the time that it takes me ages to prove im their mum because we dont have the same name =(
The only people I have to answer to are my beautiful babies aged 8 and 5

I'm same Mandy, but I cant be mine and his or his and mine, My friends actually call us his then mine as a joke as sounds like a song from Mary Poppins! I know what you mean though, I feel bad at it dying out with me, but I guess I wont be the first or the last in that position? x

In all seriousness though - for me one of the main reasons for getting married is to share the same surname as each other. I wouldn't want to be double-barreled and MrD to be 'single-barreled'.
