BT problems

Long story obscure problem but hopefully a BT software expert or similar might know the answer.
Had a residential BT number and in 2003 took an offer which gave me an extra number, as I was self employed this was helpful. So 1 line, 2 numbers.
Fast forward to 2011, some problems (harassment) had to change main number, asked at the time for BT to end the second number, but they said it was no longer associated with the phone.
Untrue - second number still exists and rings. Many phone calls to BT and a complaint later, they decided that it is a BT hardware problem and a team of 2 test and decide it is not a hardware problem, it is a software problem. They spend an hour on the phone themselves and get nowhere.
Engineers think the only solution is to close account and service and reopen a brand new account as changing the number yet again will only cause the 'ghost number' to follow me.
Any ideas anybody?? I am getting very anxious and worried.

Was this second number BT call sign ?, where a second number is allocated to the main number, but calls to that number have a different ring, so instead of ring, ring, pause ring, ring, the phone would go ring, ring, ring ( or whatever ) you could tell by the way the phone was ringing which of the 2 numbers was being called, or was it part of BT Broadband where you get a number associated with the broadband, if its 'call sign' then you should be able to call BT and get the facility ceased, if its part of the broadband, dont plug a phone into the hub,
If its call sign and the call centre staff are hard of understanding, then you could report a fault, asking them to pass the problem directly to BT's 'exchange' staff ( bt operate) with a note to remove the call sign facility0 -
Yes it was call sign and it did have a different ring.0

Stop ringing them, you're not getting your requirements over to them (probably due to a lack of training on their part).
Give them an instruction in writing on THIS FORM.
Give your main number, your account number and your CallSign number (call it that).
Instruct them to cease CallSign on your line forthwith.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
