Windows 7 machine shuts down on startup, runs fine second time

Hi all,

Having a problem with my PC that only seems to have started happening the last week or so.

When my PC is starting up the first time, it gets to the glowing window (win 7) and then shuts down. If I start it up again it runs fine. Nothing has changed on the PC in that time - nothing has been installed and no settings have been changed (that I'm aware of anyway) and I've done a full virus scan. Anyone got any ideas what it might be?

Cheers.

    Quick update on this.

It seems that the first time you turn the PC on for the day the problem occurs. It's fine for the rest of the time after. So I'm really quite confused - anyone have any ideas?

    Sticking fan?

    Video card drivers?

    Loose components?

Does seem a strange problem, was curious what others had to suggest first re: hardware causes. Maybe tomorrow, load in safe mode the first time and see if it makes a difference.

Might be work looking at the recent entries in the event log. This tool fits the job:

Just tick the BBcode and the Event log.

Still no where with this unfortunately.

When it shut down yesterday I checked BIOS and the system health. Everything seemed to be OK. It's certainly not a fan sticking as I'd hear that and it was happily going at 1566rpm. Graphics drivers are up to date, but I am contemplating disconnecting the graphics card that before I power it up again tomorrow.

I've checked the system event log and there's nothing that seems to suggest there's anything wrong. My only other thought is possibly buying some new RAM sticks to see if that resolves the problem.

Totally stumped me this one. I don't think the PC is about to fall over and stop working on me (I hope not anyway!) but time to get the documents backed up to date I think just in case.

Just as an added bit of information, there are no error entries for when it shuts down as the OS hasn't started up yet, so it's something before this process.

Also worthing running a chkdsk /r to verify yr hdd is okay, also run a memtest to check yr RAM, do this before spending dosh on new RAM.

    Memtest from here http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

One last thing try reformatting your page file (you can delete the file in safe mode) - more info if you need it.
