scotslad - i do appreciate your honesty here, and the research you have put into all this.

""My reasoning that I would spend less, is that I'd have friends coming to my house etc, and socialising inside would cost a whole lot less than it does in the expensive parts of Edinburgh I go out in!"

just because you buy a house why would your mates not want to go clubbing in town ? probably what would happen is that they would all come back to yours AFTER you had all been clubbing and you would then have to buy them all "carryouts - which would cost you even more !!

On the other hand, if you truly truly believe that you have turned a financial corner, then 'fess up to your dad and tell him the truth and start afresh with everything open and above board.

Starting a new life based on lies will sooner or later expose you as untrustworthy and further damager your relationships with your family.

What is important in life is not that you make mistakes but that you learn from them, move on, and dont make them again.

If you can prove to your dad that this is the case .... he might make a giant leap of faith in you .... only you know that.

    best of luck
  • We recently applied for a mortgage and were asked what we owed on cc's/ loans etc.
We were totally upfront with them, which I was really glad about because when he did the credit search in front of us, all the details of balances outstanding on each card and our car loan came up on the screen! When I commented that they had a lot of info at their fingertips these days (in comparison to when we last applied for a mortgage), he did mention that some people ended up with very red faces if they hadn't declared all their debts on application!

there is a software system used by mortgage brokers called the "Hunters" system, and it allows banks and building societies to compare information given to different lenders/credit agencies from the same applicant - so, if you are gonna lie - be consistent - otherwise you will be hunted down !!
  • Oh dear. Personally bricking it now! Not easy to get out of debt quickly by paying the full whack of interest on cards without being able to transfer it. Never mind, I'll work at it. Have tested myself for a month and have about £300 left over to pay cards, after minimum payments, so will start here. Uh oh...
