I opened an A&L account a loooonnnnng time ago... when they were doing a 0% overdraft... anyway, this ended and as far as I was aware I had nothing in this account and it wasn't overdrawn.
I got a letter today from santander to say I was £129 O/D and I needed to put some money in the account.
The statements online don't go back that far so I can see what's happened but I'm almost sure I was in credit
Take it if I find out for some reason I wasn't in credit I can't do anything about all these under funding fees and daily arranged overdraft fees?

Also once I sort this out I want to close all my ties / accounts with them... what's the best way to achieve this? I've never closed a bank account before...

You are contradicting yourself there.
First you saythis ended and as far as I was aware I had nothing in this account and it wasn't overdrawn.
then you sayThe statements online don't go back that far so I can see what's happened but I'm almost sure I was in credit
Anyway it doesn't really matter. You would have been charged a £5 per month underfunding fee for every month you failed to credit the account with £1000 or more and daily overdraft fees for when you were overdrawn.
You can contact them and ask nicely if they will waive the fees. They may do so or at least some of them.
When you have sorted that out you should be able to close the account by making a telephone request.0 -
Santander must be having a clear out - both my wife and I had A&L accounts openened in 2008 for preferential interest rates. Accounts were cleared out to zero balance in March 2011 and left dormant. Out of the blue in August we both received letters from their Collections & Recoveries (C&R) department. TOTAL AMOUNT OVERDRAWN OVER £500 for the combined accounts!!!
I spoke to C&R the day I got letter and they refunded £50 on the spot. Told me that September charges would be waived but I'd have to pay remainder which I did - at the time based on what I'd read on the forum, I was simply glad that it was £100 not £250. My wife couldn't phone until Monday and when she spoke to C&R then, they reversed ALL her charges there and then!
I wrote a letter of complaint asking for remaining charges on my account to be waived based on my wife's experience. I received a stock reply saying that it was my fault bla bla bla... It said in the letter to phone and discuss if I wasn't happy with decision which I did today...
I spoke to a manager who was as helpful as I could possibly imagine. He agreed that the fees were unfair and that the account had been dormant and not misused. He said that he would refund the amount I paid on my credit card in August and he would write a letter stating that the fees had been applied in error should I have any issues with my credit worthiness.
There is a lot of bad press about Santander customer services but I for one couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Be firm, be polite and it would appear that they CAN see reason when you get to speak to the right person.
Good luck!0
