bought a used car

hey guys
hope some 1 can help i bought a car on friday 12 august
before i bought it i had a good look round it and everything sounded good took it for a test drive and it handled and sounded great
took it for a drive from blackburn to blackpool (which is only 26 miles) the car was fine until i stoped at a juntion and steam came out from under the hood i had a look and it was 1 of the pipes from the top of the engine had come lose didnt worry to much because it was an easy fix just needed tightening up which didnt take long once it had cooled.
set off back from blackpool to head home and got about 10 miles in to the trip when all of a suddened all the dash lights light up and i lost all power to the car.
so i popped the hood and got the wife to turn the ignition over while i tryed to listen and see if i could figure out what had happened.
as she turned the engine over it made a sound which sounded like a chain had come lose to which i presumed that its possably the cmabelt had come off or broke or something
i got the breakdown guys out to come and have a look and to at least get me home and the mechanic had a look and said what i had thought but he said it sounded worse than what i belived that there might also be damage to the cams.
iv only had the car 4 days today and as ive seen on many threads ive read from people that there is no warrenty due to the age, milage and budget pricing so im just ondering what my options are and also my rights are as i need the car to 1 get my disabled child around and 2 to get my wife who is 7 months pregnant to her appointments so any info or help would be great .....
many thanks

No warranty due to age / mileage / price, How can we say if you have not told us any of those things?

Is the car a top secret 1 off model and you will have to kill everyone that you tell what it actually is?

    Private sale / Dealer sale?

What you need the car for or your personal circumstances will have no bearing on the outcome.

If its a dealer take the car back and ask them to fix it. WITHOUT shouting or saying you need to
pickup you sick granny who only has 1 leg and its in the wash.

If that car was bought from any form of trader you do have rights.

Although these are questions that need answering, surely you could have found a more polite and respectful way of asking.

In your letter did you state what you expect them to do and give them a time limit on responding?

    see this http://www.consumerrightsexpert.co.uk/BuyingAUsedCarYourRights.html

    To save you ploughing thru,
If something goes wrong after you've bought the car, go back to the dealer straight away. Explain the problem and how you want him to remedy it. If you aren't happy with what they say, contact Trading Standards (https://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk). If the dealer is a part of a trade association, they should be able to help you. If you belong to the AA or RAC, they can help, too.

    Demanding a Repair or Replacement

If a car is faulty, the buyer has up to six months after date of purchase in which to reject the vehicle. You can demand a repair or a replacement, unless a replacement would cause "disproportionate or significant inconvenience" to the dealer - such as when a repair might be just as good/effective as a replacement or if the defect is minor - then a price reduction may be more appropriate.

The dealer has to prove the car was of satisfactory quality when sold, so there is no need for an independent car inspection. Put your concerns in writing to the dealer and give any additional evidence to support the problems.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)
