Help over driveway costs

Hi all
Recently purchased a property first time buyer, and the driveway was a double drive with one drop kerb. However previous owners when putting in a new drive ( imprinted brickwork) they extended the right hand drive out to the road.
We received a letter from Taylor wimpey last month advising that they need to hand the estate over to the council and that they are going to take back 1.8 Mtrs of the right hand drive as it should be pavement. And that the previous owners were sent a letter back in April.
Taylor wimpey have confirmed they will put the pavement in free of charge which obviously is great news, but they won't pay for any work that is required to put the drive back to it's original condition. We have gone back to our solicitors who have said the previous owner denies all knowledge of the letter from Taylor wimpey and that they can't help us anymore!!
Is it common practice that we will have to pay for the work to put our drive back to it's current state (with coloured border) or should we take it further?
Any advice welcome

I would of thought the survey should of picked this up. I'd try speaking to the surveyor!:EasterBun0

Someone should have spotted that 1.8 metres of pavement was missing outside your house and was, in fact, a driveway extending out into the road.
It's going to be extremely messy finding someone else to blame. I'd just take it on the chin and put it down to a lesson learnt in the murky world of property. With a new home there are already enough stresses on strains on yourself so adding more stress simply isn't worth it.
If Taylor Wimpey are sorting out the pavement for free then count yourself lucky.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0
