MS Paint weird errors - help please

I am using an 18 month old laptop running Windows 7. I have been able to use MS Paint without any problems until recently. The fill tool and eraser still work perfectly. However, the pens, paintbrushes, pencils and shape-drawing tools are all working about 3 cms (on the screen) down and to the right of the mouse/cursor. I can draw a picture etc but it does not appear where my cursor is! It is like when you use an interactive whiteboard that is not properly aligned (hope this makes sense).
I know I could use paint.net or another program instead but I would really like to fix my MS Paint if I can. I've googled 'paint troubleshoot' and various other things but cannot find a solution. One suggestion my search brought up was to run the System File Checker tool, which I did but this has not fixed the problem.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would be very grateful.

It could be a mouse issue. Are you using a usb mouse or the inbuilt touchpad? Do you have another mouse, (preferably a different make) that you could try.0

Thank you SO much! You are an angel. :A I feel a complete moron for not thinking of that
as I was using a wireless mouse (connected via USB remote) because I hate using the inbuilt touchpad. I took the remote out of the USB port and then tried with the touchpad - all worked fine. I then replaced the remote for the mouse in the USB port and it reinstalled drivers... tried Paint again with the mouse - all working correctly.
I can't thank you enough.“A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles.”

Glad it worked out for you

You are recommending a £500+ professional graphics editing programme as an alternative to a "free" basic painting program without knowing what the user's requirements are? There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
