I worked in the public sector and we got 3 days for a parent plus the day of the funeral, so similar to you. I don't think that unpaid leave really counts.0 -
You haven't said who passed away, but if it's a dependent (ie, household member or someone who is dependent on you for care), then you have a right to a day off for the funeral, but the employer doesn't have to pay you.
Just for clarification, are you saying that this is a specific legal right?
Otherwise, although this is not my area, I'm struggling to see how somebody deceased can be dependent?0 -
i took two weeks off and got paid when my Mother died. Mind you I was working silly hours anyway, so I would have been very upset if I had been docked pay!
I took six days off when my Father died, again same deal, I think the policy where I work was 3 days for close members0 -

Yes.If it's somebody who *was* a dependent you have the right to unpaid leave to both arrange the funeral and attend.
HTH
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -

I think it's immediate family, so mother/father/son/daughter/brother/sister/grandparents. But the entitlement is to unpaid leave. Whether your employer wishes to pay you is at their discretion. If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -
So sorry for your loss. I agree with pp's that it was harsh. I am in the public sector, so totally different to private, I know, but we even get paid time to attend funerals of colleagues family members, eg a girl in my office lost her granny and we all went to the funeral and were paid.0

Hmmm...I have to wonder why employees in the public sector receive more generous benefits than those in the private sector...But that discussion is for another day.If you will the end, you must will the means.0 -

I would guess thats at your managers discretion?0 -

Please can you, or KiKi, point us to where this is enshrined in legislation. It would be useful to know.0
