Toilet that doesn't flush properly.

Hi folks,

Maybe a bit of an embarassing problem to ask about but has anyone else a toilet that your need to flush 3 or 4 times to get rid of waste?

Its one of the older handle type close coupled toilet, fills up with pletny of water and flushes ok, but still takes 3 or 4 flushes to get rid of waste frequently, was installed around 1988 I think

I used to think it was the height of the cistern aboove the toilet the higher I thought the greater the flush strength.
But I don't think it is this, I have a cheap button flush toilet-to-go upstairs that cost £50 and everything goes in first flush.

I think it may be the design of the toilet bowl itself, where equals amount of water come out all the way around the rim, so rather than pushing it down the u-bend, this flush effect is not that effective in getting rid of waste.

Just wondering is there anything I can put under part of the rim in bowl so that waste gets a greater push of water towards the u-bend. I would readily buy a new toilet from b and q but would mean buying a new bath as well as the old toilet and bath is a cream colour.

Any help appreciated.

With a small mirror, look under the rim and try to determine if the waterways that let the water flow into the bowl are blocked. If something like a blue loo or cistern freshener has disintegrated and is sitting against the waterway, restricting flow, or if some other debris is blocking waterways. Does it look as though water is coming through all of them?

Poke a flexible plastic implement up the waterways to see if there's any physical obstruction (use a pipe cleaner or similar)

My toilet eventually became impossible to flush over few weeks. I read up on the subject and a torn syphon valve was indicated. I drained the cistern and removed the syphon unit. Sure enough a CD sized piece of very thin white polythene was split almost in two.

I racked my brain for something similar around the house before hitting upon the plastic that holds the printed material onto the outside of a DVD case.

You can guess the title that donated the plastic. I doubled it up to make the thickness the same, cut out the central rectangular hole and trimmed around the edge using the original as a template.

I am not saying that the repair will last ten years but it will give me time to find a suitable replacement.
