can anyone please help

hi all,

now where to begin, ok i will try it this way lol.

my bf is due to be made redundant on friday, i have just been told i am no longer entitled to my sdp as my eldest has turned 18, my bf can no longer afford to stay where he was so we are thinking about moving into together but i wondered what kind of money we would get.

i am currently claiming income support for myself and 2 children (i have 3 but my eldest dont qualify)

i also get an £28.85 per week through i/s because i am disabled

i get my disability high mobility and middle care.

my eldest is claiming jsa as from today (he only turned 18 saturday)

i currently get full housing benefit and council tax benefit

i do not get any form of tax credits all my money is paid through income support

my bf also has an iva which is due to finish in 14 months

i just wondered what we would be entitled too as a couple it would be lovely to live together but can we afford too

many thanks julie x

Best look on https://www.entitledto.co.uk have a play around with the figures.

It really depends on what redundancy payments your bf will get, and what income he will be on.

I am not sure how IS will be worked out and whether you can claim as a couple? If you can then your benefit will remain unchanged. Are you a council tenant or private?

And they say romance is dead.

When we got married we saved 1 lot of rent etc so 2 could live almost as cheaply as 1
  • hi

yes he is and has been looking for another job but as of yet he is unsuccessful obviously we do not know how long he will be unemployed for but he is applying daily.

he will be claiming jsa as soon as possible he will be getting about £3000 in redundancy but he is worried the iva will take that and that is why he is going to have to move out of his current place.

i currently live in a council property

    thanks again
  • sorry i dont think i made my situation clear, my son is claiming benefits he is entitled to whilst looking for a job, my bf was going to use his redundancy to live on whilst searching for further employment, but obviously with having the iva they come 1st thus having no extra after the iva have took theirs, he is not moving to escape his debt, as you wrongly said. sometimes people read into things that are not there i came here for some advice and have now been left to feel a bit disheartened.

OP, you and your boyfriend holiday together with your kids and have weekends away together etc, for benefit purposes you could already be classed as a couple...

Not hanging about is he? Has he done any courses since leaving school? Did he get any qualifications?
  • If the son is only just eighteen, and presumably just left school, surely the parent is still getting CB and CTC until the end of this month (or until the son gets a job or signs on for JSA, whichever is soonest?)

That rather depends on whether the lad left school at 16 with the basic (or no) qualifications or stayed on to take his A levels. That's why I asked if he has taken any further education courses. Got to be a better idea than signing straight on.

it all seems rather fortuetous. the OP is losing her SDP because her son is now an adult. seems like she has also lost ctc and cb for him too. NOW it's ok for the boyfriend to move in as she won't lose benefits as he is now also unemployed.

will the boyfriend move out when he gets a job?
