Problems in plumbing

Hi guys! I joined this forum to ask for some help or advice. Why does the toilet overflow everytime I use the washing machine? Both share a common wall hook up. What could be its cause? Should I call for a plumber? Thanks.

  • Hi, you would be better off posting this sort of query on diynot.com I think. This is more a computing-related techie forum.

    Good luck!

I do agree with the above post but I'll throw in a guess...

The only way a toilet cistern is going to overflow is if the valve controlled by the ballcock lets water in. If it does then it must be faulty and they are cheap and easy to replace so that's what I'd try first.

Why is it happening - no idea really but probably something to do with pressure variarions as the washing machine goes on and off. From memory the valves come with two different nozzles and you choose which to use depending on water pressure ie direct mains feed (high) or from a header tank (low).

Blockage in the waste pipe they both feed into, so the water can't escape quickly enough and is backing up into the toilet (if you mean the water is coming up into the bowl)
  • Better that the washing machine backs up into the toilet than the other way around! First thing that I would check, as TonyMMM suggests, is to check the waste pipe. Try posting on the "In My Home" board.
