Burglar Alarm Activation

Hello!

When I moved into my house (4 years ago) there was a burglar alarm installed. It used to go "Bonk Bonk" whenever you opened the front door but my ex unplugged it as it annoyed him. The people who lived there before didn't tell us the code for it or leave any instructions etc.

Does anyone know who I could ask to show me how to use it and also if it would actually be worthwhile? Would it actually help my insurance costs significantly?

Ta in advance

Download the instructions and do a factory reset?
For anyone to give advice you'll need to state the make and model.

In terms of how to use it, if you google the make / model, odds on you'll be able to find a manual for it.

The code may be trickier. You may be lucky and the manual may show you how to do a factory reset or similar. Otherwise, you may need to contact the manufacturer, or one of their appointed service agents, who can reset it for you. That's not as bad as it sounds - I had a similar situation last year, there had been a fault that just needed an "engineer reset". Phoned the company, they said if I could wait a couple of weeks one of their guys was going to be in the area at someone else's house. He came round, spent all of 90 seconds resetting my alarm, and they didn't charge me anything as he was in the area anyway. So it's worth a call :-)

Oh, and your last point, it probably will reduce your insurance a bit, although some insurance companies insist on an alarm being professionally installed and serviced regularly ( as opposed to a DIY installation ). But there's no harm in asking them.

  • With some Micromark units, after a power down (both mains power and back-up battery disconnected) to code defaults to 0011.
To be safe you'd need the instructions to set a new code though as the bad guys might know this . . . .

Oooh, don't say bad guys, that's scary.

OK i'm going to find the instructions and see if I can sort it out without annoying the neighbours. (Might start trying at about 11 tonight)
