Toshiba Satellite Pro L450D Screen Broken ? Impact Damage

I have had the above laptop for a year. Within 10 months the screen looked like this
P1000671.jpg

I sent it away for repair under warranty and the company returned it within 48 hours saying it was impact damage.

I don't know how it can have had impact damage without me noticing it being dropped etc lol.

Does anyone know from looking at the photo what sort of damage has occurred so I know if its worth following up the refusal to repair it under warranty.

Have you asked why the casing isn't dented?

When I spoke to the warranty people.., they just kept saying over and over it was impact damage.., but would not define impact damage. I pointed out it can't have been thorughly inspected (I suspect it was opened, turned on, they thought 'oh we can say this is impact damage and shut her up' and then the case was closed again - the turnaround was incredibly quick, it can't have been in their depot even 24 hours lol). I have asked to be told what the inspection report said i.e. why they say it has to be down to impact damage and they said the person who inspected it wasn't there.

I don't feel this is impact damage, but don't know how to get the lappy repaired with them just insisting it is. I have taken the lappy to a pc repair place and they said they don't think it is impact damage (as you say, there is no damage to the screen or case externally and I haven't dropped it), but they said they couldn't be certain what the damage was caused without opening it up and if they do that, it will invalidate the warranty. I'd rather get the lappy repaired without having to pay for an inspection if I can but i will if I have to.

I would ask Toshiba, they say phone is preferred though you can e-mail them, which could be better as you will have any response in writing.

Looking at the photo it looks like leaving a pen or other object on the keyboard when you close the lid damage. Seen that a load of times. See the dark spots? They're where the ends of the object would have been. There is no way on earth that damage can be cause by anything other than an impact on the screen side of the display. A smack on the lid would not cause that - you would get either a large crack on its own or pressure marks that would appear as light areas on an otherwise normal screen. You wouldn't get dark spots.Neither would seized hinges be the cause - that would be in the bottom corner. If it was an electronic fault with the screen, you wouldn't get it working perfectly in the shape it is in the top left corner.

In short, someone at some point has left something on the keyboard, shut the lid, realised and then kept quiet about it.

Just back from the Baskervilles? Now there's a proper answer...

Thank you santer and Hammyman. Its very useful to know how the damage occurred.

Before I read your reply Hammyman, I phoned the Toshiba number (should have done that sooner really), spoke to technical support and the gentleman I spoke to said that the internal layers of the screen WERE broken (there is some evidence of 'colour bleeding'). I am not sure how this has happened, but so be it.., am buying a replacement screen. Its not too expensive - under £40 with a bit of shopping around. Shame the PC repair shop I took it to couldn't be as up front lol (for obvious reasons., they were asking for £120 to repair it lol).

£120 sounds reasonable and is about near the top end of what I charge as it varies from laptop to laptop. A brand new screen is around £60-£90 for most laptops and there's an hour labour unless you have a Compaq CQ60 or CQ61 and then there are two hours labour.
