The water is rising up the vent here so I am assuming that the blockage is between the property and the main system outside my house.
Dynarod were sent out to me. As the blockage was outside my property there was no charge to me, hopefully it will be the same for you.

with all them flashes of heavy rain we've had over the past month, some drains will get blocked up with stones, dirt, sand, etc....I would try BatCat's suggestion by buying one of those flexible rods in B&Q (never seen them but want one) :D

B&Q set sewer rods £19.98.but try a brush shaft in the manhole (not down the pipe) just where the pipe passes into and out off the manhole prob a ball of something sitting there.
counting down the time I got left.:beer:
  • I know what people are saying about the rods but the blockage is too far away from the drain cover. It would be impossible to stick it down the vertical pipe ane make it go in the right direction. In fact, the main problem is that I can't see much due the watse water being at too high a level.

I think I really need to find some way to get the water out and get a light down there to have a good look. Easier said than done :-)

If your manhole is full your looking in the wrong direction.the manhole being full tells you its getting at least to there but possibly no further so as I suggested earlier try a brush shaft in the manhole and probe towards the road but DONT try to put the shaft into the pipe itself,if that dont shift it it may be in the backdrop on the main and you may have to get dynaplod but do try the brush shaft idea first, may save you a packet.

Hi, hope they sort it for free

When I had a problem like this I worked out the blockage was between two manholes. I then got my hose pipe with the jet nozzle and fed it in, up the pipe towards the blockage, turned the water on full as I could and after just a couple of minutes it all came gushing through. I then fed the hose in the first manhole and gave it a good squirt the other way.

It came so quick I didn't have time to pull the hose out - so that was the worst bit - cleaning the dirty, stinky hose!!

But anyway, job was done for free

keep a very close eye on them if their private,if they say theres no charge for coming out they will try to make it by spending time "on site",If they just look at it and tell you they have to use a jetter they are setting you up for a big bill as they charge more for using that than using rods and if they tell you they have to ring for the jetter ask them to try clearing it with rods as that is a classic timewasting (and charging)exercise.good luck but dont let them "rod" you. ;)

Thanks for all the tips. There is a drain cover beside the house. Lifted it and there is a high level of waste water. The toilet pipe goes through the kitchen extension and out there, as does the kitchen sink and washing machine water. The water is near the level of what I assume is an overflow pipe, which I also assume goes out to the same main waste pipe under the driveway.

There is a vertical pipe in the front yard. The main waste pipe goes under the drive and then diverts right under the very small front garden where the vent is situated. The watr is rising up the vent here so I am assuming that the blockage is between the property and the main system outside my house.

Sounds like you have a blockage between that inspection chamber and the public sewer in the road. There are a lot of companies that unblock sewers that are a lot cheaper than dynarod, typically about £80. What they generally do is send a pressure hose down and in most cases that does the trick. With very heavy rain earlier in the year it could be that the public sewer was running full bore and your own then started to build deposits in your sewer.

It could also be a blockage or impeded flow in the public sewer and your manhole is the first lowest point up from the area of impeded flow. Is there a manhole in the road where your sewer joins the public sewer?

Hopefully it is just a blockage, happens all the time. Worst case would be a collapsed sewer, but that does not happen that often in private property.
