Waste pipe into sewer

Hi,

I am looking or an individual or company that can help me with a waste pipe problem.

In our front garden we have an old waste pipe vent (vertical) just before the waste is taken from our property to the main sewage pipes under the main road. Yesterday I saw that that the water has risen up it and is near the surface. I am assuming there is a blockage between our property and the main sewage pipes.

Is there someone who can help.

I live in Belfast.

Bit of an urgent issue.

Thanks in advance,
C

I had similar issue and found I was covered by my house insurance, worth looking at your policy.

I had this issue in a previous house and the blockage was in my front garden within a buried manhole. NI Water came out, dug up the garden, cleared the blockage and filled in the hole they dug at their exepnse because it was in the public part of the drain.

try sticking a power washer down it (if you have one), or poke it with a flexible stick.

First are you sure its a sewer vent pipe?they go down below ground so you shouldnt be able to see if water is rising up it.If your sure it is and not just a downspout for water from your roof gutters then before ringing any of these private people and incurring a substantial cost look for a manhole in your drive or garden,it should be light duty and easy to lift with a screwdriver.have a look into it and if its empty the blockage is between the house and there. If it is there you should try filling your bath with cold water and letting it go,sometimes the force of it will clear it.If the manhole is full then its between the manhole and the main sewer on the road.If you have an old brush shaft or length of rod try putting in just into the manhole and you should feel where the pipe from your house passes through it,lots of times there will be a ball of toilet paper (amongst other things) just at the pipe entrance and if you stir around there it usually clears it.It is very rare to be the main sewer on the road,if it was your next door neighbour will have troubles also and then it would be ni waters problem but they will not clear a blockage on your property so try and have a look before you call dynaplod as they charge by the half hour for 2 men and also a callout of about £80 before they even arrive and have their lunch.
counting down the time I got left.:beer:

    Hi,
You can also go to B&Q and buy some flexible rods to try and plunge the blockage through rovided you have a manhole type thing you can open (which you probably should as it is a condition of modern building controls).
NI Water will also come and trace the blockage for you and either fix it if it is on their side, or give you an idea of what it is if it is on your side. We found they were pretty helpful!

  • Thanks for all the tips. There is a drain cover beside the house. Lifted it and there is a high level of waste water. The toilet pipe goes through the kitchen extension and out there, as does the kitchen sink and washing machine water. The water is near the level of what I assume is an overflow pipe, which I also assume goes out to the same main waste pipe under the driveway.

There is a vertical pipe in the front yard. The main waste pipe goes under the drive and then diverts right under the very small front garden where the vent is situated. The watr is rising up the vent here so I am assuming that the blockage is between the property and the main system outside my house.
