Rant: UK Mail

I ordered a few things from John Lewis and on Saturday they sent an email saying my order was on its' way and to check the progress on the UK Mail site.
I clicked through to it on my phone at first but when I went to access it on my laptop, it hasn't worked, and hasn't done so all weekend. I checked it on this site and according to that, it is indeed the site and not my internet being awkward.
I just want to know where my parcel is
:(:( will try calling JL later on, but if it's been despatched and is with the courier, I'm not sure how much they know about it! Really annoying

well you got the dispatch email on Saturday
so the earliest I would expect it is Tuesday
they are unlikely to have weekend IT staff0 -

One of the parcels was delivered today, and checking the site from my work email, it seems to be working. Not really sure what happened there, maybe they just really hate Chrome?0 -

I'm not really sure what your issue was though?
sites go down at the weekend all the time
they get addressed on the Monday
which is what the case would be here0 -

Perhaps that was the case, I've never heard of sites going down at the weekend though so that would be why I was confused. If it happens in the future I'll know.0 -

I think what he means, is that if there is a problem with a website over the weekend (especially if it happens Saturday night/Sunday), unless it's really critical to the business it's not uncommon for them not to get fully fixed until the Monday.
Basically it depends on the level of support they have for the site, as full 24/7 with techs/devs* available all the time is very costly, so often a site may have issues but not get them resolved until "normal" working hours.
*And not just the guys at the hosting company who might be able to reboot, but require instruction/authorisation to do more.0 -
Found this thread when looking for something else thus the late reply.
My OH works for UKMail and the majority of IT related work gets carried out over the weekends so not to disrupt operations during the week for the day and night shifts. At his depot the IT work normally starts on a Saturday afternoon after they have finished for the day and I would imagine it's the same company wide. This could well be why you couldn't access the site.0 -

Garbage. Any company with a site will have someone available to fix any issues at any time. More often than not its not a big job to fix so doesn't always need an engineer on call 24/7.0 -

What "garbage".
Not all business owners are website developers or have the know how to fix a problem. Your therefore at the mercy of the designers working hours.
And if you dont need an engineer on call 24/7, how will you "fix any issues at any time"?
Your clearly not a web developer, or website owner, or somebody with any sense infact. It's not unknown for the big corporations websites to go down for several hours, until the fix can be uploaded.0 -

Who said it would be business owners fixing the tech issues?? Not me. Designers don't generally fix websites, they design them. And if you dont need an engineer on call 24/7, how will you "fix any issues at any time"?
What I meant was you don't need a 50k a year engineer on call when a technically minded member of staff or colleague can generally do the job.Your clearly not a web developer, or website owner, or somebody with any sense infact.
Am I not? Ok, you clearly know everything about me.It's not unknown for the big corporations websites to go down for several hours, until the fix can be uploaded.
A site going down for several hours will generally mean it is taking several hours to fix the problem not that there is noone available to fix it as they are eating their tea and watching Emmerdale. There is no site on this earth that remains down until 9am Monday morning due to staff not working on a weekend. If a site is down until 9am Monday morning then the issue is still being worked on at 8.59am Monday morning.
Your response is quite hostile really.0 -

Wow! You're lucky! I'm still waiting for the useless ****s to deliver my phone. I have to go out at 4 today and I'm not hopeful it'll be delivered by then.
