October getaway - suggestions needed

We've had kind of a stressful summer. Would like to go away for a few days at the start of October, but not sure of where to go.
It's just the two of us. Looking for somewhere warm, not very touristy and not too expensive. I hate resorts with rows of high-rise hotels. Would prefer somewhere quiet and beautiful where we could rent a flat for a week.
Someplace with good cheap food that the locals would eat. We love fish, seafood, good wine... I don't want to walk into a restaurant and see a full English breakfast on the menu.
Not particularly keen on beaches, but some kind of water would be nice. I just want to sit under a tree, book in one hand, drink in the other.
I was thinking one of the smaller Greek islands, maybe? I don't really know.
We'll probably end up booking something last minute. I'm still not sure when my job is going to end. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
