Direct debit problems

I have had a direct debit set up with n-power for over 12 months now, i arranged for a payment of £40 p/m to come out of my account. I have recently noticed that they dropped the payments to £16 p/m without contacting me and now have arreas of £300+ !! Should they have contacted me with the change of circumstances?? I would rather them had me in credit than arreas!

Maybe they did and you didn't notice. Ask for an explanation and report back. Meanwhile search the NPower website for a description of how/when they conduct direct debit reviews.

Any reason why there is no mention in your post of meter reading?

The supplier should definitely have given you notice of any change to the DD arrangement. As they didn't, you can reclaim the amounts via your bank under the DD guarantee ... but that means you'll owe even more money to the supplier.

I suggest you keep a closer eye on your bills and your bank statements in future. If you had done you would have noticed the amount being collected was reduced by £24. What's more, if £40 per month was realistic, then the reduction has been going on for 12 months  If £40 wasn't enough, you should have spotted this from your bills.

My guess is that estimated readings are involved here too. If so, you should be checking them against the meter and advising the supplier of any large discrepencies oif you wish to avoid this happening in future.
