Help with cancelling Thomson Package Holiday

Hi all,
We have booked an all inclusive package holiday with Thomsons to Mexico for June 2012. The thing is, we have decided that we were stupid to book it in the first place due to money and the cost of it. We have paid £300 deposit with another £200 due last Friday 12th Aug. If we a) cancel it do we still have to pay the other £200 and b) if we pay the full £500 deposit can we then change to a 'cheaper' European destination? We are silly paying close to £4k (including spending money for a holiday when only just paid for our wedding/honeymoon this year, so being sensible realising it was a big mistake which we want to fix now!)
Thanks

Sounds like you have paid a low desposit. So yes, in the agreement you will have agreed to pay the full deposit (extra £200) regardless. And they will ask for it. You could just refuse to. In theory Thomson could chase you for this money, not sure if they would or not in practice, but they could as you signed an agreement.
With regards to paying the full deposit and then changing, what do the T&C's say. I know tour operators will do this but it might only be in extraordinary circumstances, not sure if they will if its just a plain change of mind.0 -

Never worked for Thomson, but when i worked for another large high street agency that was tied to a large tour operator, ant low cost deposit defaulters were chased by company solicitors, thus adding extra cost to whet they owed. Like i say,not sure on whet Thomson do, but in this day & age, i should imagine every penny will count for them.
As for chancing it to a short haul holiday, i can't see what the problem would be. we used to do it many a time for people. The only stipulation is that the holiday (as in the Tour Operator) would need to be re-booked with the same tour operator. I presume they will have used a Thomson branded company to book your holiday. If this is the case, just go in and speak with them.

Hi
We did similar (booked a holiday, paid low deposit then I got pregnant due around the time of the holiday so cannot go!).
We had to pay the rest of the deposit and I discussed transferring the deposit to another holiday. They charge £35pp per change - so if you want to change 2 people to another holiday - £70 plus the difference on the cost of the holiday (if any). If you were thinking of transferring the deposit to someone else to use on a difference holiday, it would cost £140.
In the end we transferred our deposit for that holiday to another couple and they paid the £70 transfer cost. I'd give Thomson a call and discuss your options.
Alternatively, as long as you cancel 51 (I think) days before you go, you lose only your deposit.
