bluebag, I quite agree about ironing bedding. I haven't ironed for years but as a business we now need to have ironed sheets for the guests.

I will be showing all the ideas about making it easier to DD.

skintbint I wish I had known or even thought about it myself to put a damp towel in the dryer. One of the problems this week was that all the bedding was far too dry to iron and the steam iron was making so little difference.

Hi i used to work in a hotel laundry and used a rotary iron and it was great, but to be honest they are very expensive (hundreds to thousands!) and i think they would only pay for themselves if you have about 20 rooms a day to do. I would go with the steam generator iron (have never used a press) as they are a lot quicker than a normal iron and you will find your DD will figure out her own shortcuts to doing things faster it just takes a little while (ironing the bedding on the bed is good, i used to iron the top tablecloths on the tables to get the best finish)

forgot to say slightly damp bedding is definately the easiest to iron and get best finish thx skint

I did lots of ironing in my days of au-pairing and for bedding good folding and press is definitely the way to go!!!
I had the big steam generating iron (with couple litrs water tank) but once you know what you are doing press is faster and easier. I am sure there are some Youtube videos to point you the right direction on how to get the most out of it!

Meritaten - my OH has office job and I constantly iron shirts etc... If my OH tried not to supply proper equipment he would have been doing it himself for the rest of his life!!! To have to work on him to at least get you proper iron.... let him do it!!!!

lol - my OH works for a water utility and his VAN is his office! his uniform needs pressing, but it would take a miracle iron to make it look good. But, he is one of those people who dont notice details! as long as it does the job its good enough! Drives me crazy! If I make the effort to iron - I like it to look like its come from the laundry - he doesnt really notice if its come from the Tumble Dryer!

I have a OH like that, I think it would take an actual parting of the seas to impact his bubble.:)

This may be a stupid question, but can a steam press do all temperatures? Any recommendations Please?

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Was about to say why bother ironing bedding - then read post which said it's a business. Must admit I love being away and having beautifully ironed sheets...not enough to do them myself though!

I bid on a rotary iron on ebay but it went way out of my price range so I am now going to see if I can find a reasonably priced press as hex and a few others suggested.

There may be someone with one lurking in the back of a cupboard, not being used, so I will start by asking on Freegle and see how I get on. I have already asked for a rotary iron and had no offers. Maybe when financles allow a steam generator for the household ironing may be a good idea. I don't iron anything. Like beemuzed, if something is folded well or hung up straight after drying it shouldn't need ironing. Business is a different idea all together.

I have told my daughter all of your ideas, thanks.

  • I've found this thread and wondered if anyone can recommend an ironing press. I work really long hours at the moment and find I'm so shattered that I don't manage to get round to it (plus I'm really slow and full of aches and pains). I'm having to use an ironing lady once a month to catch up or I'll run out of work clothes.

I know they're expensive, but I'm spending £25+ for each (addmittedly huge) bag of ironing. My husband is also now working close to home, so his ironing is now going to be added to mine. So I'm thinking that I'll make my money back eventually if I'm not getting in help.

There seems to be a bewildering array of different presses and the prices vary quite a lot, so any advice on what to buy would be very appreciated. It would really only be for shirts and trousers.

(I'm working myself up to an ironing frenzy tonight, hence why I'm on here)

First question is why do you have to do all this ironing? The lady above had a business so needed to do it, but there's a lot of domestic ironing done that doesn't really need it. Work shirts and blouses yes, but what else really needs ironed in your house?
