Cheapest but Good Pickling Vinegar in Bulk?

am in need of doing lots of preserving soon with all these veggies i'm cropping, but a friend's suggested not buying the Sarstons brand as it's full of additives.. I didn't realise that vinegar was full of rubbish. Anyhow, I'm not intending of buying anything too costly as most of the jars would probably be eaten within the year anyway. Can anyone recommend pls.

Thanks

Any old bulk malt vinegar will do the job, apart from "pickling spices" which to my taste are just swamped by the vinegar anyway, they are all the same

If you are using clear vinegar, the same applies

Watch out for "non brewed condiment" it is not real, brewed, vinegar, but tastes like it & is often used as a substitute, which may explain your "additives", like colouring

you can put your own pickles in

malt vinegar is more expensive as it has more expensive ingredients and has to have a brewing process

NBC is water, acetic acid (same as vinegar) and colouring

Its what you put on your chips as a kid.

NBC - is this the 'value' kind that s/m's sell? Morrison's have one at 13p a small bottle which is actually a lot cheaper than the Sarstons plastic bottle kind (not sure whether that's a gallon). What do you guys use?

I use the Morrison's "value" at 13p a pint [568 ml] , ingredients are spirit vinegar & malt, which is brewed AFAIK

Not being funny here, but depending upon your religion, if any, the provenance, halal, alcohol etc may be an issue, try Google for spirit vinegar if in doubt

erm, am not at all religous so am able to partake in anything alcoholic, non-halal etc.,! Still haven't done anything about the pickling idea. might have to buy some today. It'll be a bit heavy what with the sugar i'll be buying for my syrup making today (doing damsons as well) and I"ll be travelling by bus!
  • anything less is not 'pickling standard'. I pickle our egg glut and eggs need to be certain of 6 percent acidf.

I am currently trying to find a bulk supplier myself, will post what I find.

Have a look in your local greengrocer's, I buy the ready pickled vinegar, the last one i had was 2 1/2 litres for £1.99, cost will vary as I expect will size. I always used to pickle my vinegar myself many years ago but this is much easier.
