Duty free alcohol confiscated.

  • Contrary to what some have said, yes it was bought at the airport, and yes it was confiscated.
Yes, she should have stuffed her handbag and bottle into the carrier bag, but as she said it all happened so quickly and she found the person very intimidating so just surrendered it. Main reason I brought it up is as a warning to others who were perhaps not aware, as we weren't.

A work colleague also travelled through Stansted, having all her toiletries under 100mls and in a clear ziplock plastic bag. Security staff there made her buy another plastic bag from the machine there as they said it was the wrong size - which necessitated her having to change her euros just to get the pound coins.

Last time I travelled abroad I actually went by bus just to avoid the hassles.

This brings a number of issues into play. Firstly, duty free sales do not exist for people travelling within the EU, so what she was sold was not duty free and she could have bought the goods at the other end in the baggage hall arrivals shop, if they have one.. depends on the airport, but this removes the problem completely. Most travellers are unaware that this facility is now available at many airports. Secondly, Ryanair would not "confiscate" a bottle, they may as stated say "leave it behind or pay for it to go in the hold" but they have no right to confiscate goods.. if they did you need to write to them and get an answer. Or the credit card company, if she paid by card. Thirdly, only security would confiscate goods, but within the EU you can carry "duty free" liquids anyway as long as they are in a sealed bag. Frankly, booze in many other EU countries is cheaper anyway, and round the world outside the EU, much cheaper in far off airports.

if Ryanair afraid it is in their T&Cs.

Strictly one item of cabin baggage per passenger (excluding infants) weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm is permitted. (handbag, briefcase, laptop, shop purchases, camera etc.) must be carried in your 1 permitted piece of cabin baggage.

Not really the shop's responsibility to tell the passenger what their allowance is I'm afraid

Yes and these terms are quite clearly displayed when you go to the boarding gate

Thomas Cook were doing it last time I flew with them, even at check-in were making sure it was 1 bag.

Then at the boarding gate over the tannoy thing they use. I wouldn't say they are a low cast carrier but then I don't fly Emirates or anything :o

This must be a new thing then, or were you flight only? Last time we flew TC (last October) there were plenty of people boarding with their Duty Free in additonal carrier bags infact some people had more than one carrier bag.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
