Where for a beach holiday in November?

Hi,

We have 2 weeks off from 12th Nov 2011.

So far we have come up with Mexico, Cuba, Egypt & Maldives.

We're looking for relaxation, good food, and good weather

Would anyone recommend these places and can you offer advice on the suitability in November?

One slightly odd thing is for Mexico, I have read that there is only 6 hrs daylight in Mexico, does anyone know if this is correct?

Many Thanks

We went to cancun last Nov/Dec. Weather was excellent - low 20s every day. Sun rose before 8 and dusk was around 5.30 pm

I wnet to The Gambia one December instead of the Red Sea where I usually go. After I'd booked, I found out you need to take anti-malarials and it's resisitant area so best with the expensive ones (Malarone). They cost me about £48 if I remember rightly. You can take a cheaper kind but in some people they cause sun senstivity which sort of defeats the purpose of the holiday. It's not just a myth as it was my GP surgery nurse who told me it happened to her and she had to cover up for the entire holiday.

There are lots of oher places to go where you don't reisk malaria.
  • Take a caribbean cruise out of Miami or FortLauderdale. The Hurricane season is over, fabulous weather, great variety and food too die-for.

I would suggest Brazil, november is their spring fast heading into summer. Try visiting Salvador in Bahia (specifically Praia do Forte). It's in the North East and close to the equator. I am biased to go there having lived for 3 months in that neck of the woods tho. Can't beat whale watching, seeing sea turtles and the beach all in one place tho!

Didn't visit Praia da Forte but whenever I told anyone I had booked for Salvador, they asked why I had done that and said I should have gone to Recife. Salvador is a bit of a hustlers' paradise. I hadn't been in the old town (which is a World Heritage site, BTW) 15 minutes when I was approached by a man who asked if I wanted a "nice girl"! Also, you really can't go to Brazil without visiting Rio and having a caiprinha at the Copa Palace but that's another 2hrs flight south. The one positive is that the time difference from the UK is only a couple of hours so no jetlag to speak of.

Getting back to your original suggestions. I've visited Egypt a number of times, usually in December although I once went in May and once in October and it was too hot for me at those times. The food is nothing to write home about though. If expense is no object, and you said you want relaxation, then it will have to be the Maldives. The closest I have been to them is Seychelles but, again, too hot for me. It was December and temp was over 38Celsius.

The down side of Rio is it the weather can still be a bit iffy in November ( i had 3 days of rain when I went in November!). Still it is also worth the trip, but I wouldn't have said the bets place for beach. Most of the brazilians head to Salvador or Recife and then on to a smaller resort to stay since the beaches in salvador aren't fantastic (and rumoured to be quite polluted). Another place to consider would also be Natal. Avoid Porto Seguro, it's a tourist trap hell hole.

The alternative is to go to the 5* mega resort Sauipe which is 1 and a half hours from Salvador. Stunning place, private beaches and nobody bothering you. Spent a lovely three days there by the pool/beach stuffing myself with club sandwiches.

If you wanted something slightly off the beaten path, fly to salvador and get a bus to Lencois (4/5 hours away). It's a town within a nature reserve (last remnants of the Atlantic rainforest.) Loads of caves, waterfulls, diamond mines, 4x4 adventuring. Actually u said you wanted a relaxing holiday so maybe don't bother with this one!
