Why can't I get 1900 x 1200 resolution?

I have a ATI Radeon HD 4850 which I beleive is capable of 1900 x 1200 using a Dell 3007WFP monitor. I am running a DVI cable but I can't my resolution any better than 1280 x 800.

Am I doing something wrong?

How are you trying to obtain that resolution?

I have an nvidia card now but IIRC the ATI Catalyst control allows you to specify resolutions not shown by default.
It is in the advanced section in the Control Centre.

I have a very cheap and cheerful Asus Radeon HD 4350 and that is running at 1920 x 1080 on Win 7. From memory I had to get the latest drivers to make it work though so that is probably what you need to do.

Tried via Windows (right click, Screen Resolution). Can see the larger resolutions but when I click onto them, screen goes black.

Tried via ATI Control Panel and can see larger resos too but screen goes black and I cannot press the Esc button to exit that resolution.

    I believe the 4850 is capable of the 1900 x 1200 reso.

The monitor will support 2580x1600 but this is a quote from the web:
the 3007WFP defaults down to 1280x800 when running with cards that don't support dual-link DVI

The card should be dual link, but sounds more than a coincidence it's dropping to that resolution. As stilltheone says, check the cable - many DVI cables don't have all the pins connected through.

According to Wikipedia I appear to have a DVI-D dual but still nothing. Re-tried with my old Dell 2407WFP and it works OK
