student going to study in spain

My daughter is going to study in Spain for a yr and we need to know if she would need to open a new bank account in Spain in order for her to pay her rent /bills etc and how long this will take and what restrictions there are? she already has a santander student account in the uk however they have advised we cannot tranfer money from this ??? to an overseas account

she will need to have access to funds immediately and proberly could do with a credit card for emergencys to

she is leaving at the beginning of september and would realy appreciate any info asap

I spent my year abroad in Spain and seem to remember it was quite easy to open a bank account once I got out there, although not particularly quick... I'm afraid I can't remember the particulars but it was linked to my home address here in the UK rather than Spanish one - I think it was a "foreigners" account aimed at those buying property out there?

I took a couple of hundred pounds in travellers cheques to see me through the first couple of weeks (much harder to spend on impulse than cash!) - you could always get her a pre-paid card which you could top up from home in case of emergencies?

She will have an amazing time, I wish I could do it all over again!!
