Why does my Solicitor need so many personal details?

I know about the Money laundering rules but my Solicitor has asked for all of these, is this necessary?

1. Passport/Driving License and Utility bill
2. Full employment and anual income
3. Full bank account details
4. Date of Birth
5. Work phone number and email address.

  • Passport & driving licence for proof of address
Employment & annual income - to make sure you have the means?
Bank account dets - to pay any money into e.g. equity
Date of Birth - erm to make sure you're not under 18?? I don't know
Work phone no & email address - so they can communicate with you.

    Not wholly unreasonable

Because he has to satisfy money laundering requirements, because he needs to stisfy the banks' ID requirements and because he needs to have contact details for you. Imagine the scenario - your mobile fails, exchange day, you lose the purchase because he can't contact you - or imagine from his point of view you are a shyster who is committing mortgage fraud..... the more checkable information you provide, the better....

What's the problem ? Would you rather that people were able to provide less or are you frightened he/she will be stalking you or selling that information ?

All apart from employment and annual income they are to satisfy the money laundering regulations which have got stricter in the last few years.

I have no idea why your solicitor is asking for your employment and income because the mortgage people usually sort that out, and communicate information as needed with your solicitor.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)
  • I suppose if your solicitor has to verify any employment/income details with your mortgage lender??
As has been said already, it's down to strict money laundering rules and regs.
Best of luck with your purchase
