Fake £20 note !! Given to me by the post office !!

Went into morrisons yesterday and bought £18.50 worth of shopping i handed over a £20 note then was told it was fake !! They took it to the office tested it and then came out and said it was deffo a fake.
The note came from hubby`s pension money,at the post office, its the only place we got notes from.
Surely the post office should check their notes  but since it happened to me others have said that the post office is known for handing them out .
So my £18.50 `s worth of shopping cost me £38.50 after i`d paid with it on my card :mad:
i`ve now got an ultra violet pen !

I would take it back to the post office and complain, it's more than likely a genuine mistake that the cashier did not notice, but the more details of the transaction or proof of it you can provide the more likely they are to believe you.
did they let you keep the note?

Hi, no Morrisons said they have to keep it to hand over to the police :(

My mrs works for costcutter. Fake pound coins in pre packed bags are a regular occurence from the bank; including lead ones!!

Just spoke to mrs about this-between the lines in shops (managers know) the note is passed through the chain. In other words, get rid of it.

Morrisons must have followed the letter of the law on that particular day.
As surely as night follows day capitalism will come crumbling down. On a mission to secure a just and ethical society.

Or manager pocketed it and passed it off somewhere else.
Or manager pocketed it and spent it because it was actually genuine.

Did you leave your details OP? The supermarket is supposed to send it away for official examination to see whether it is a fake or not. They're supposed to get back to you with the result (either the return of the £20 or the letter to show it is indeed a confirmed fake). If they just took it with no proper procedure followed for writing down the serial number and taking details from you, I'd go back in and demand the "fake" £20 back so you can get it tested yourself. They are not the authority on whether a note is fake or not and a note should not be deemed fake just on their say so.

Perhaps you wouldn't expect the most meticulous response to the presentation of a counterfeit note from a supermarket and, of course, as a customer, you're just relieved not to be placed under arrest, but it's improper if you weren't given at least a receipt for the note. This would then provide you with the opportunity to take the matter up with the Post Office, not that I can be sure in any way that they'll accept responsibility, as it'will be difficult to prove it came from them.

Apart from holding the note itself, the most vital information the police want after that is where it came from, so failing to record your details is unhelpful. If anyone passes on a counterfeit note knowing it to be counterfeit, it's a criminal act.
Never ever give your card details to anyone over the phone, and check the reputation of any company you do intend to give them to.

I always worry about this happening. At my Post Office they scrutinise every note you pay with, but you should hear the tutting, puffing and blowing if you examine a note they give you in front of them!

I saw an elderly man last week holding a tenner up to the light at the PO counter and the postmaster snapped at him "There's a queue behind you, move out of the way and don't be holding people up!" The guy just put the note away and left the PO but what if that too had been a fake?

In one of the shops I used to work at, we had to check notes, and it's amazing how many customers took it personally, as if I was doing it because I didn't trust THEM as people.

If I handed change back to them in notes, quite a few would check them, but in such a way that I knew, and they knew they werent checking it properly, they were just doing it to try and make a point. It's funny how childish people can be about stuff like that. If you're going to check a note, at least look at it.

In the shop I used to work in, we always had to check notes, but there was no system in place to tell you what to do if you got a fake - I found a couple, but just refused to accept them as I knew there was no way I could get hold of a manager or someone quickly to let me know what to do, and if you asked, you were fobbed off.
Although, the morning a man tried to pay for a large bill (it was around £4000 iirc) with £50 notes, I refused to take the money until my manager had checked it - I never saw enough £50s to be able to tell a fake, luckily the customer was really nice about it, and understood my point.

Hi, hubby had to ask them for written proof - otherwise they would have just let us walk out of the shop etc - but at no time did they ask for our details !!
