Bought and paid for Mauritian rupees, on collection lower exchange rate given

So we went to thompsons to buy currency for our wedding and honeymoon, laid 1k on the table for 42 mauritian rupees to the pound, so were expecting 4200 back, when the missus collected the money, we only got 3900, the excuse given that the exchange rate changed (she didn't argue the case)

My understanding is that we made a point of contract, money had been exchanged, can Thompsons do this? Can I quote something, I'm quite riled and will request the manager on Monday, this has cost us £65 quid

Any help/advice please!

    You have lost me

You say you bought and paid for them , then on collection the rate was different.

How did you pay for them? because you then say you laid £1000 on the counter when collecting.

Exchange rates change all the time (well usually once a day and twice on fridays in fx exchanges).

Did you order online and get a comfirmation of the rate? if you did then you have a case although I dont understand why you didnt bring it up on collection, if you didnt then you havent a hope

39 to the pound does seem very low though if it was today as there are many places doing them at over 42 to the pound
  • Paid for them last Saturday, picked them up today

"Went to Thompsons(sic)" and "Laid £1000 on the counter" doesn't sound much like you bought them online.

So what you are writing is that you paid for them last Saturday in store when they were at a certain rate and now they are giving you less when you go to pick up.

The problem with this story is that I doubt if Thomsons were offering 42 Rupees to the Pound. Have you anything written down to this effect? Any kind of receipt or slip?

Even on their website they are offering 40.2 and last week it could have been only 0.5 of a Rupee higher. So 40.7 Rupees available on-line. So it's likely they would offer even less in-store.

Whatever possessed you to buy your currency there anyway?

Thats not what your OP said. "laid 1k on the table " How did you pay cash if you bought them online.

I think this post is a wind up, I asked you how you paid etc and did you get comfirmation of rate, neither of which you answered

Or are you saying you went in store a week ago and paid for them and then had to wait a week to collect them? If that is the case then again do you not have comfirmation of the rate when you paid for them
  • I'm working on an ambulance, we're not getting much down time.

Paid last saturday but they needed a few days to get the money in so the girlfriend picked the money up today. They took the receipt from my girlfriend when they exchanged it, we got some form of receipt back which I haven't read yet.
  • It may be too late now but if you can get them to refund the best value place to get the currency is on arrivals at Mauritius airport. I think it's shilpa finance - you can see their rates online. Have a look at Mauritius airports website for currency exchange. Oh an have fun - I love mauritius - where are you staying?

Yes, definitely much better to get your money on arrival in Mauritius; all the companies in the arrivals hall have to offer the same rate so it matters not which you use.
  • I was on my ipod first thing so couldn't post the link. Looks like the current rates are 43.25 per £.
