truecrypt can either encrypt a whole drive or a certain amount of it and the data is encrypted full stop. To be able to read it you have to run the truecrypt program and enter your passphrase. Makes very little difference in drive speed you won't notice it playing video or music from the encrypted part.

If you encrypt something doesn't it become 10 fold bigger in size?

More than just user permissions.

NTFS is a recoverable file system. It includes journaling, basically files are easier to recover, and corruption is much less likely as logs are kept for an changes made.

TrueCrypt is very good. Well worth using.

maybe a small percentage bigger but nowhere near 10x - the overhead is in setting up the encrypted partition.
