Buying a 2nd hand car
Hi all,
We've been looking at getting a 2nd hand car from a dealer. We found a car today that we think may be right for us but when I asked what discount we would get as we would be paying cash, we were told nothing. Is this usual? I always thought being a cash buyer was a plus...
Can you let me know what your experiences are? and if you ever managed to get freebies thrown in, in a similar situation.
Hope this makes sense and very much appreciate your help/comments!

I asked this same question a week ago on here and the consensus was that no you dont get a discount as they make more profit from the financing than they do on the car.
I got a full tank of diesel, car tax, and their maintenance pack (worth £1200). You could also try for mats, extended warrenty (I stupidly forgot that), 3 years servicing/ MOT or even insurance.
Hope that helpsMan plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
Last time I tried to bargain with a used car salesman, I was offered £500 trade in ( sold privately for £1100 around a year later to the first guy to come and view).
After saying no trade in, paying cash and willing to take it with the small dent and couple of scratches, I was told it didnt cost them to get dents/scratches removed so no.
Some 20 mins later and a talk with his manager, I could get £100 off. With the dent and scratches fixed? Nope. Suddenly they cost to get fixed.
Ok, it was only a 4k car at that time (around 5 years ago) but it's scarred me for life.0 -

I bought a 07 Ford Focus from a Ford main dealer in January this year. I part ex a 53 reg Focus with them. At first they wanted my car plus £4,700 then they dropped it to mine plus £4,300 and in the end I got them to accept my part ex plus £4,000 cash so it is possible.
My old Focus was in good condition and had been serviced and MOTed a couple of months earlier so they didn't need to do much to it, and they put it up for sale on their forecourt straight away, with a profit.
They make money through finance deals, and good condition part ex's that don't have to send to auction, so it you were cash only they might not have made that much money on you.0 -
Thanks everyone that's great info. I am not part exchanging... so I guess I am not in position to haggle on the price but I shall try to get some extras thrown in instead! Thanks for your help!0

If you are a cash buyer why are you not attending an auction. Theres next to no risk (using common sense) & you will get your cash discount - a very big one. Probably about a third of the asking price at a car dealers.0

No you are in a great place to haggle you have cash plus no px they need to give some discount road tax full tank of fuel if not look elsewhere, they can afford to give you something & in these tough times you should expect somethingTheres only two rules to remember1) Im always right2) See rule 10 -
