IB query - Do you need a GP to agree?

  • The Doctor may not even realise she works full-time. You could say something like 'I cannot go to work at the moment so will need a sick note' etc.

Don't forget she may be able claim statutory sick pay from her employers for a while (if she hasn't already); she won't be able to claim IB until this has run out.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • When my medical condition got so bad that I couldn't take any more I went to my GP and said that I couldn't take any more please would sign me off work?
It was done, just like that.

    new leaf,
i believe your mum would be best suited in getting another gp dealing with her. My gp is fantastic & i have never had to ask him for sick note's or help. I am like so many people extremely proud & dont like the thought of being a burden as you put it. However i struggled on at work , whilst everyone inc my gp said i couldnt do it anymore. It wasnt until my manager was awkward that the penny dropped & i 'gave in' i have just been accepted onto IB & have the full backing of my gp who has said that I should also look into DLA. Even tho i think i may be entitled i am still dragging my feet thinking there are prob worse people etc. Please tell your mum, she has to do this for herself & take the advice you give her. At 56 she has worked most of her life & is entitled to some help from the state. I really hope she gets the help she needs.
  • She needs to have paid NI contributions for the immediate 2 years before claiming IB I think!

I would suggest full support of a GP.

Just a thought - do you ask outright for a sick note (politely of course) or do you have to wait and see if the GP offers one? My mum has been so poorly (goes to bed when she gets home from work) but has carried on working beyond when I think she should.

that would depend on a number of things, what her condition is exactly and if its a long term condition which affects her ability to preform her job, thats what you will know so from there you will have to explain to your GP that it affects her, it really depends on what your GP is like, if hes stalling try and see another GP at the surgery (if there is one) .
