Atlantic City, NJ

Looking for a bit of advice from all you world travellers:

H2B is turning 30 next year and I think a trip to the USA is on the cards:D. I would like to take him to New York City with a view to spending a few days in Atlantic City too, has anyone done this before? Is it ridiculous to put these in the same trip?

As yet, I have no idea how to travel from NYC to AC. I used to live on Staten Island and know that my mum once drove to AC with some friends for the night so I figure it can't be *that* far but I dunno (please don't laugh at my naivete!:rotfl:).. I have a basic knowledge of distance throughout NYC and northern Jersey but other than that I'm a bit flat.

I have a good knowledge of NYC so I'm looking for some info about AC.

Have you been? Where would you recommend to stay? Things to see/do? How long is an ample enough stay, I.E would three days be laughably short? Is it expensive? And top of the list: How would you suggest to get there from Manhattan?

Many many thanks for any help anyone can spare!

Julie
"What day is it?"
"It's today," squeaked Piglet.
"My favorite day," said Pooh."

It's a horrid place - people only go to gamble. Vegas it isn't though.
It's easily drivable- just remember cash for the tolls. A day and a night is all you need.

I used to live near AC and let me tell you it's really the pits now. The casinos are run down imitations of the LV ones, and the room prices are quite high as well. It's about a 2 hour drive from NYC, only a couple of roads you need to get on, the NJ turnpike and the AC expressway. The vibe there is quite intimidating, when you get the crowd from South Jersey and Philly together sparks usually fly.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

On the more positive side..... the AC casinos run free shuttles from NYC to AC, we got one from Penn Station If I recall correctly.

AC is most definately NOT Las Vegas, but if you want to see some big big casinos with a sea view, then why not ?

I did something similar a few years ago only went to Philadelphia en-route. Train to Philadelphia and later from Philadelphia to Atlantic City. Bus back up to NYC. All fairly easy travelling.

In Atlantic City itself, we booked a room for three nights and left after one. That's how good it was for us.
  • AC is awful. After New York, you'll feel like you're in some kind of a filthy, grey, post-apocalyptic hell hole.

If you get bored of NYC (how could you?), there are many places within a short distance that are much better than AC. Try Philly.
