What colour laminate flooring goes with black?

I am redecorating my living room at the moment and i have a very large cast iron victorian fireplace in black, black/charcoal sofas and very pale grey walls. while i am very happy with this look i am at a loss as to what flooring to put down.

I like the idea of lamionate but what colour?

Any ideas would really be appreciated

  • Hi, I had a bit of an 'imagine' on this (it would be easier if you could post a photo) and I think the bit you need to work with is not your fireplace, no matter how imposing, or your sofas, but your grey walls. If they are very pale it may be that you can get away with anything. However, if there is a distinct grey-ness then most pale, neutral shades as long as they are not too brownish (like walnut) should be ok. White-ish shades and pale maples should be particularly suitable.
I googled laminate floor so I could check out some shades and these guys have a huge range for colour checking purposes. I thought the vendome oak might blend with the grey tones whilst providing a little warmth.

Just my thoughts, hopefully others will have more experience of this colour scheme than me and be able to offer some real life experience. :-)

I think it also depends on the light you get in the room, whether its south facing (warm light) or north (cold light). if its north and a bit cold in terms of light, then I would think a warmer tone wood would be better as black and grey are pretty cool shades and you will need a bit of a balance. saying that, some greys are warm LOL so I think we really need some visuals here :-)
  • If you can get to local flooring place you should be able to take a sample away. We have grey walls and at the minute I'm tempted between light and dark so I've borrowed some Quick Step samples, and some laminate from Wickes.

i'd go for something darker and warmer looking rather than paler - quickstep do a nice looking merbau colour in their perspective range and the oiled walnut looks nice too (but then i always seem to like walnut coloured stuff :D)
