I currently run a parttime business from home but do not actually use the phone that much but am setting up a new strand to my business and therefore need a separate phone line. At the moment I am using a mobile number/phone but I would like a landline as I just find mobiles awful in terms of reception/quality when talking to people so this is just a temporary/cheap solution.
My questions are:
- Do I need to have a business line put on or can I just get another line put in?
- Who offers the best package - incl installation of line? Am currently with Virgin for phone/broadband/basic TV but also have Sky TV
Or does anyone have any other ideas of a good cheap solution while my business is growing?
Thanks for any help.

Do Virgin have their own version of BT Callsign (another number and another ring tone on your exisiting residential line)? If so, that may well be better in the early stages.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Another alternative is to get a free geographical number from Sipgate www.sipgate.co.uk . Comes with free line rental, and free voicemail and you just point it at your existing number. You just pay a small amount for the diverted call,s.0

It's technically a breach of the T&C';s, but providers neither know nor care if you use a residential line for business or not. But if you take a residential tariff, don't expect any kind of SLA or priority service if you get a fault-nor will you be able to claim any compensation for loss of business.
For a one-person business, it's unlikely to matter. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Thanks for the advice - will look into all your suggestions.0

I'd just get a regular telephone line - not worth bothering with anything else for a one man band.0
