Do we need planning permission to knock down our garage or does that only apply when building a new one?

I understand that demolition requires planning permission.

Have you checked that its not go an asbestos roof? If it has you need to take special precautions when removing... Neighbours of mine have pulled down garages to build extensions but I'm sure they did't ask permission . I guess ask your local council just to be on the safe side..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

You don't need planning permission unless an article 4 (removal of permitted development rights) applies to your property.
Conditions on how you demolish it and how you get rid of materials will possibly apply so contact the council's building control department.
If you intend to re-build at some point consider that it is easier to get planning permission while the existing building is already up rather than after its been flattened.I'm retiring at 55. You can but dream.0 -
