Grrr - are all landlords and letting agencies so useless?
LA tells us about a flat, originally saying it was 775 - we planned on going 750 tops though.
Went to see it and the guy assured us it was actually 750 - we accepted and they took a holding deposit.
THey called back a few days later to say the landlord made a mistake and wanted 800 which we declined (apparently, he was drunk when he said 750 - I think the LA were playing games).
Few days after that we compromised and offered the originally mentioned 775 which the landlord accepted.
LA called back today to say he has let it to someone else.
Jeez, does this guy know he is screwing around with peoples lives - we have deadlines to meet as notice has been given on the current flat. So its back to square one and looking for places again in a market which is now very fluid with lots of people looking for places.

Walk away, there are plenty of other agents out there.0 -
yeah, theres tons of them up here - just very annoying when we thought it was all sorted and now we are gonna have to make time available again to visit more places

Legally, the verbal contract is binding...the Landlord could be sued to allow you to have the house for the agreed rent...however.......people get away with it because it's not worth the 'victim's' time to pursue it......
Find another agent and 'remind' them next time that what they say is binding and you know your rights.....

You have a contract with this 'LL' and, if you wished, could sue him for any losses you may have incurred. It may be difficult to prove what was said and he could argue that he was drunk so it probably isn't worth the hassle.
My guess is that the LA said the LL was drunk to have the contract null and void.
Change LAs and, when you have some time to kill, waste their time by viewing a property or two. Revenge is a dish best served cold.
EDIT: Post crossed with scrummy's. I think you could only sue for your losses and not tenancy of the property), but I could be wrong - I was once, but I divorced her

GGThere are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those that don't.0 -
heh heh - I may well find a way way to waste some of their time in the future

Anyway, back to the search...0 -
Can he prove he was drunk?0

Just be thankful that you didn't end up with someone that eratic as your landlord!
I'm STILL gloating at the fact that the first place we tried to rent is still available four months on. It's the first thing I look for when the local papers arrive.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
