A Right Rollocking Rockies Roadtrip - How does this sound?

Me and my better half are off to Denver at the start of next month for a road trip around the Rockies.

Over two weeks we were hoping to have a nice tour of Colorado (generally heading South West down to Mesa Verde and Durango before heading North to Grand Junction), see some of Utah's Canyon Country, before heading up to Grand Teton and Yellowstone before driving Montana/Wyoming to South Dakota before heading south back to Denver.

I'd be interested to see if anyone had any particular ideas for non-missible things which might have slipped my attention from the guide books. We'll have very large SUV so can go past where the tarmac ends........

Careful with the hire car small print - you may not be insured if you travel on an unsurfaced road. Even in areas where 'normal' roads are unsurfaced.

Sadly true but it's a risk that has to be taken in that part of the world. It is ludicrous that they hire off road vehicles without off road insurance.
  • We did the same tour a few years ago except we headed North first. Our route was Denver, Rocky Mtn N.P., Cheyenne, Custer(for Mt.Rushmore & Crazy Horse), Devils Tower, Buffalo, Cody, West Yellowstone,Jackson(for Tetons), Grand Junction, Durango, Mesa Verd,Colorado Springs (Garden of the Gods) and back to Denver. It was a wonderful trip but I wish we had taken 3weeks instead of 2 as it was a bit hectic sometimes. Highlights were too many to mention but float trip in Jackson will always be a favourite!! Enjoy.

Looks like exactly my planned route in reverse. We're starting out driving up Mount Evans and then down to the back of the Great Sand Dunes.
  • Looks a great trip, we did similar on a coach trip last year. I would not miss Bryce canyon or the rodeo at Cody and the theatre at Jackson was a good evening out.
