Son is off to Dhekelia Cyprus sometime later this year. Any advice would be much appreciated.
We have downloaded some info but a lot of it is for service families and not much for single blokes.
He says he will get joining instructions but I expect there is loads of stuff we need to know before this
(We dont even know how to pronunce Dhekekia yet!)

Have a look at BFC bay and Bfc Buy sell and swap shop facebook pages, they are for the Cyprus community and are primarily selling pages, however there are discussion boards and there is a lot of useful information for those moving to Cyprus.
(It's pronounced DIK AY LEE A).
We are a family living at the other end of the island, but feel free to pm me with any specific questions and I'll do my best to help.0 -
can be a little expensive now in the euro zone, stay away from napa it is not all it is cracked up to be and not worth getting kicked off island for being caught there, protarus is just as good if not better. the queens in DHK is great for food and the danni andry hotel has a great relaxing atmosphere. get a snorkel as the sea life and sea in general is amazing and more importantly take advantage of everything cyprus has to offer from AT to going up troudos for a spot of sking.0

While it's good you are taking an interest in your sons career, you have to realise he is a big boy now and has to learn to survive on his own. As he has told you, he will receive joining instructions, telling him what he needs to take.
There will most probably be people that he knows that have been there before and he can ask them.0 -

No, we have done lots of asking around and so far no one we know has any recent experience hence we are sking for info on this forum.
As for joining instructions - well thye are usually given to them very close to time and have insufficient info or not enough indepth info. The only things we have at them moment has lots for married couples and families but not single lads“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. What Service is he? I'm assuming it's the RAF?
Has he emailed his new Boss in Cyprus asking for details? Has emailed they guy he is relieving?
What exactly is it you want to know? There will not be much difference from joining a base in the UK for a single guy. He will live on Base in SLA and eat in the dining hall. When he get's there he will be told where he is allowed to go on the island and where he is not.
His joining instructions will tell him what rig he needs to take etc.
Have you tried the forum specific to his Service?

But as I asked in my original post, why is he not finding out for himself? Your son will not be the first single bloke that has ever gone and he needs to be more pro-active himself, rather than relying on his parents asking on forums.0 -
I am asking for general advice from MSE forum members. He did not expect to get this posting, just assumed that its would be UK or Germany so it has been a very nice surprise but we have not done any reading up on the place because it was so unlikley.
We know that there will be many similarities between a UK base and Cyprus one but not all things will be the same. Just as one UK bas eis not identical in every shape and form to another.
Yes he is finding out as much as he can himself. But we also want to find out things for ourselves as parents. Hence the reason for the original question.
He is "not relying on his parents"
I did not say that he was not being pro active himself so dont assume.
We would rather have replies from active servicement and their families who have been to Cyrus or served in Cyrus recently“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Well you will struggle to find the answers on here and would be better posting on one of the forums I posted in my last post.
Also, I am currently and serving.0 -

We are in Dhekelia at the moment, and love it here! The social life is fantastic, with lots of bars and restaurants near the base and loads of opportunities to try different sports.
Larnaca airport is nearby so easy for you if you want to come and visit
What sort of things did you want to know?0 -
I'm in DHK at the moment. Feel free to ask away.Grab life by the balls before it grabs you by the neck.0
