I had sealed the new plaster with a strong PVA

Whoops .... you're a brave lady to admit that on here ... using the P** word on here is strictly forbidden;)

Sorry .. it's dreadful to have to start again. But tinge it with relief that the DPC looks OK. Sand the remaining P** (nearly got caught there:rolleyes: ) off with fine sandpaper - until you lose the shine and are creating plaster dust? Then leave the wall a couple of weeks to make sure it still looks perfect.

If OK - just prime the plaster with a coat of wallpaper paste (bit diluted) before re-papering
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

Excellent advice from Mikey, at least the DP is okay.

Dont put any sealer whats so ever on it after you have stripped the paper back off, do like Mikey says, and then give it a good couple of weeks for the plaster to recover from its shock.
Then, before you actually paper again, a day or so before you are due to paper, just make up a thin solution of paste and size the walls ready for papering.

The thing is, you can line new plaster walls, hang ordinary paper, but avoid all costs of hanging vinyl paper for at least 6 months, and then dont put anything on the walls except either watery paste as a size for the papering, or a miscoat of emulsion prior to painting, and never use silk or soft sheen either.
  • I spent a very dirty day sanding the wall down, but at least I slept well. And at least I know my damp proof is ok.
don,t know about being brave Mikeyorks, I feel realy stupid, but to be honest I did'nt know what I was supposed to prepare the wall with and now when I think back I'm realy don't know why I put PVA on the wall.
I'm going to much more careful in future I can tell you.
And thanks everyone your advice has helped me so much.I was in such a state before I took the paper off and saw what was going on underneath.

If it's any consolation .... my ultimate DIY stupidity was, many years ago, to put some vinyl tiles down on top of some other vinyl tiles.

Just as with adhesive trapped between P** (nearly caught again!) and vinyl paper .. the adhesive couldn't dry. And spurted up, with rude accompanying noises, between the joints .. each tile you stood on. After several days .. and many pairs of socks being stuck to my feet .. I realised it would never dry and had to strip off both layers of tiles. Much extra work .. but saved having to throw away socks each time I went in the kitchen .. or playing hop-scotch, just to avoid it!!

Back to wallpaper. The only time to ever use P** under paper is where (as with my previous 400 year old place) you find layers of limewash under the old paper. Having spent weeks scraping / washing it off .. you eventually realise you can spend a lifetime doing it and never succeed. So P** is acceptably used to stabilise it - before cross lining it and then papering. But you could only use vinyl paper if you first allow the lining paper to fully dry first.

In your case you should be OK if you do as advised - and I trust it works for you this time.
