Buying a flat

I'm planning on buying a flat, only bought houses before - what extra things do I need to consider or find out about?

Thanks for the advice, some of that is very useful.

I went to look at a few flats yesterday (in London, around Bow / Mile End). I found myself being influenced by things like if the block had lots of flowers and window boxes and whether the stairways smelled of urine, but are those good ways of judging if it's a 'nice' block of flats? If not, what should I be looking for?
