Toby Carvery: Cheap But Not Cheerful!

Options
Toby Carvery, Brentwood, Essex.

Standing behind another couple also waiting to be seated.
A member of staff arrives says to me I'll be back in a minute and takes the couple of to their seat.
After a couple of minutes the barman asks if we are being dealt with. I say, he said he's coming back.
After another couple of minutes a different staff member asks the barman where the first staff member has gone.
She takes us to our seat. I see the first staff member chatting way to another employee.

Table waiter arrives I order a drink we serve ourselves waiter reappears later to check the meals ok.
We finish the meal. Ten minutes goes by no sign of waiter to pay. Fifteen minutes later, decide to pay at till.
We query the bill, speak to the manager, turns out to be my error not theirs. We leave.

I look at the receipt and it says 2 course meal. Wife says what was the second course, go back and find out?
(Only one course at other branches of Toby).
Speak to barmen he says, meal includes either a starter or dessert. First member of staff appears.
I ask about the second course. He says we offer two courses if you didn't have two thats it, you left.
Manager appears and queries what's happening. I explain.
To my surprise he says "This is the most random complaint I have ever heard in 15 years".
I wasn't complaining, I was politely asking for an explanation. Although I was talking quietly their louder voices were
attracting attention. I was starting to feel this was a bit embarrassing. Manager then says, come back in and
have the ice cream if you want. No I say, I'm not desperate for an ice cream, can you give me your name and
I'll write a letter to your company. He says you can do that if you want, but it will come to me to deal with anyway.

I guess you get what you pay for cheap (lukewarm) food and cheap service.

I've been for dinner once before and been for breakfast for a few times. The one at Eastbourne. Service was fine and the food was what it is..
