I'm going to have to get this book. I'm owed a book for xmas as was brought one I already have so I'll request this as a replacement.
I decided last year to turn my largest flower bed into a veg patch (and this xmas was the first time I have ever enjoyed eating sprouts!! Even if they were a tad on the small side!).
This year I am turning all my beds into veg patches and having, aside from the lawn, a completely edible garden. Being in the south-east-ish region I can even have grape vines along the trellis and kiwis growing along the other fence!
My next major purchase is an eggloo so I can keep chickens.
Its fab for the kids, we sat on the decking last summer with the bbq in full swing shelling peas and eating them as they were. A true summer heaven.
I also have the new english kitchen (mentioned in previous post) and that too is inspiring. Well worth getting.
All I have to do now is find a way of keeping those pesky slugs off my beans!! They ate the lot last year despite being littered with egg shells. Nemetodes are looking more and more appealing.0 -
Old thread I know, but we're looking at Chickens and growing our own food (just have berry's and potatoes at the mo)...does anyone have an Eggloo or know where the links to a more self sufficent life are?
Thank You.

My DH got me the John Seymour book for xmas - it was great. I've got the mini allotment, just got to convince DH that a smallholding is worth aiming for........ he thinks he couldn't keep animals for food.0

I first got John Seymour's book some 20 odd years ago as a book prize at school, I still never get tried of reading it. Its a fab book for reference or for simply dreaming about the self sufficent lifestyle so many of us long for. I have also one of his other books, ' Fat of the land ' which tell his story of how he & his wife Sally began their jounery. I would highly recommend both of these.

If anyone can recommend good varieties of baby veg to grow in tubs or hanging baskets then it would be appreciated. I especially love aubergine, courgette, peppers and salad leaves.0 -
