Nope, I've heard it's quite good, he has a section in there for urban self sufficiency and harnessing natural energy. I am very tempted by it but promised I wouldn't spend any unnecessary money this month.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I was thinking of you yesterday, as I nearly posted a thread about Rose Prince's "New English Kitchen" yesterday - you recommended this great book last year and I think it's £4 with the Book People Sale. A good one for new oldstylers.
Back on topic........This John Seymour book is great (OH got one for Christmas). My parents did a bit of pig/ chicken/ vegetable plot thing when I was young and they used it. It's got a lot in it, and you may need more detailed books if you needed in depth information about animal husbandary etc. but it's a great read..........especially for us dreamers. Covers lots about veg growing through to preserving, keeping livestock through to butchery etc. John Seymour died a few years back I think. He appeared to be living a wonderful, non-consumerist, self sufficeient, green lifestyle.

We gave this to DH for his birthday on Monday (half price in WHS in Nov). He loves it! It has drawings, rather than photos, so has a lovely feel to it.
We plan to buy a small holding within the next decade, so it's a perfect start for us (we already have hens and grow lots of fruit and veg).
Any ideas how I can stop DH trying to engage me in which cows we should buy:rotfl: :rotfl:
Penny. x:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
it's a handy book to have, bought BIL one and he was chuffed. try your local library first though and if you think you'll use it enough then buy it ;-]0

I have this book:) If you are at all serious about self-sufficiency it is the classic work on the subject. But if you just like to dream (like me) then its fantastic too. It's got lots of gardening info and preserving/baking info which most of us can make use of.
Another good one is Paul Heiney's Home Farm

I got my copy last summer for my birthday.
It has charts for when to plant ,sow and harvest.
I like the 4 pictures of the veg garden through the seasons.Im always looking at them. They are inspiring.Sadly hubby wont let me have bees.
I've got the 1970's version too which is more fruit and veg but less livestock and dairy work.
His book 'the fat of the land' is all about his starting in self sufficiency, they had it in our library, its a good read and makes me feel very humbled.0
